Horse Shoeing -Part 1

July 16-2010
Yah well I am seriously fed up with horse shoers! I get I'm a high achiever and I like a job done right and well done. I mean the shoer I have does a great job but, he hit Pride 2 times with his hammer during the process. I may be only 13 but I'm going to learn how to trim and shoe my horse. Our shoers going to teach me how. Within these next couple weeks he's going to let me trim one of our horses, so we'll see how I do. I'm sure I'll do fine. Anyway it would be a big relief to me if I could do it. I'm constantly worried that the shoer will put a nail wrong or get the shoe on there crooked, which will then affect Pride....yah, I worry alot. I just find security when I do things, because once I know what to do I'll have the time to do it, I mean sometimes our shoer comes out and is in a hurry and messes up. I mean and then there is the money...a little trim is expensive and easy to do. Anyway here is what Prides feet looked like before:

As you can see Prides right front foot ( ^ looking at the picture it would be the left hoof) does not have a shoe on it, and his other foot is really long with a shoe on it.
Back Feet^

These are the finished result today:

Prides right foot (the foot he lost his shoe on) is more round then the other one, Will (the shoer) said that the hooves have a tendency to do that when they pull shoes. I'm hoping to get them more balanced in the future.

I almost want to try to not shoe him at all, since it just adds weight to his hooves making it more stressful for his feet. But we live on a ranch, and their are alot of rocks on our ranch so I don't know how I will do it. In the winter I will trim his hooves once a month and keep em' balanced and healthy. Anyway we'll see how they do tonight when we go for a ride in our hills :).
